## Why we will not give you a hard number

The commonly cited threshold is around age ten, but the exact line has varied between
interpretations and between pathways, and the underlying law has been amended more than once.

A number stated confidently on a website is worth very little when a Conservatória applies the
rule to your specific file. For a question with this much riding on it, the right source is
official AIMA channels or a qualified immigration lawyer, not us.

## What is stable enough to plan around

**Young children are generally exempt.** The requirement is not applied to small children.

**Older minors may need to demonstrate language knowledge.** Whether and how depends on the
pathway the application runs through.

**School in Portugal usually resolves it.** A minor educated in the Portuguese school system can
normally evidence the language requirement through school documentation rather than by sitting an
exam. If your child is in school in Portugal, that is the first route to investigate, because the
document already exists or will exist without any extra process.

## If your child does need a certificate

The CIPLE is open to minors, and the A2 material is squarely within reach of a child who has been
in a Portuguese-speaking environment. The exam is not age-adapted, though, so the format itself
needs familiarisation even where the language does not.
