Can I take the CIPLE exam outside Portugal?

Yes. CAPLE delivers the CIPLE through a network of authorised centres, roughly 100 of them across about 35 countries, so you do not need to be in Portugal to sit it. Availability varies a lot by country, and your certificate is collected from the centre where you sat the exam.

How the network works

CAPLE sets and marks the exam centrally in Lisbon. Authorised centres deliver it locally. Each one decides which sessions it runs and when registration opens, which is why availability differs so much between countries and cities.

CAPLE publishes the list of centres. Start there, then contact the ones near you directly rather than relying only on the portal.

What to check before committing to a centre abroad

Which sessions it runs. International sessions run in May, July and November, but not every centre offers every session. A centre that runs one session a year is a very different proposition from one that runs three.

The fee. Fees vary by centre and country. The 90 to 120 euro range is a planning figure, not a fixed price.

How you get your certificate. This is the one people overlook. The certificate is shipped back to the centre where you sat the exam, and you collect it in person. If you sit the exam in one country and then move, collecting it means either returning or arranging for someone to collect it for you with a signed written authorisation.

Ask whether the centre posts certificates before you book, not after.

The results timing is the same wherever you sit

Results are published once papers from every centre worldwide have reached Lisbon, so sitting the exam abroad does not slow your result down relative to anyone else, and sitting it in Lisbon does not speed it up. Everyone in a session gets results at the same time.

Practising for a European Portuguese exam from abroad

The exam is European Portuguese regardless of where you sit it. If you are preparing somewhere that Brazilian Portuguese media dominates, that is worth being deliberate about, because your input is what trains your ear and your vocabulary.

Can I retake only the part of the CIPLE that I failed?

Do not assume so. Some centres have allowed candidates to resit only the failed components at the next session, but policies vary by centre and are not uniform. Confirm directly with the centre where you sat the exam, and plan financially on a full resit until they tell you otherwise.

How do I know if I am ready to book the CIPLE exam?

When timed practice puts you comfortably above 55% overall, with no component anywhere near the 25% floor, and does so repeatedly rather than once. Feeling ready is not evidence. A run of scored results under real time pressure is, and it is the only thing that makes booking a decision instead of a gamble.

Is the CIPLE exam in European or Brazilian Portuguese?

European Portuguese, throughout. The texts, the recordings and the examiners all use the European standard. Brazilian vocabulary and spelling cost real marks in reading and writing, and the accent difference is hardest in listening, where reduced vowels and faster rhythm can make a familiar phrase unrecognisable.
