Is the CIPLE exam the only way to prove A2 Portuguese?

Two routes to the same requirement

The Conservatória needs a document proving A2. It does not need that document to come from an exam.

CIPLE is a single exam on a fixed date, run by CAPLE. You register, you sit it, you wait roughly six weeks for results.

PLA is a course pathway. You enrol with a DGERT-certified provider, attend over a period of weeks or months, complete assessments along the way, and receive a certificate on completion.

Both produce A2 proof accepted for citizenship. Neither is a lesser version of the other.

When PLA is the better fit

• You cannot get a CIPLE slot. This is the most common reason and it is a completely legitimate one. If registration is the wall you keep hitting, PLA sidesteps it entirely.
• You are not at A2 yet. A structured course gets you there and certifies you in one process, rather than requiring you to reach the level first and then prove it.
• A single high-stakes day does not suit you. Ongoing assessment spreads the risk.
• You want a predictable timeline. You know the course length from the start, rather than waiting on CAPLE's session calendar.

When CIPLE is the better fit

• You are already at A2. You can be certified in months rather than committing to a course.
• You cannot commit to a course schedule. The exam is a single day.
• Cost matters and you expect to pass first time. The exam fee is typically 90 to 120 euros.

The one thing to verify on the PLA route

The provider's DGERT certification is what makes the certificate valid. Verify the certification number before you enrol, not after. A course from an uncertified provider may be perfectly good teaching and still produce a certificate the Conservatória will not accept.
