What the CIPLE actually contains, how long each part runs, and what the reading paper looks like.
Budget most of a morning. The reading paper runs about 45 minutes, writing about 45, and listening about 30. The speaking interview is separate and short, usually 10 to 15 minutes with one or two examiners. Exact timings vary by session, so treat these as planning figures rather than a promise.
A handful of times a year rather than on demand. International sessions run in May, July and November, and there are other dates depending on the centre and country. Not every centre offers every session, so missing a registration window or failing can mean waiting months for the next opportunity.
European Portuguese, throughout. The texts, the recordings and the examiners all use the European standard. Brazilian vocabulary and spelling cost real marks in reading and writing, and the accent difference is hardest in listening, where reduced vowels and faster rhythm can make a familiar phrase unrecognisable.
Two short everyday tasks. One is a reply to a message, such as answering a friend's invitation. The other is a short email or note for a practical situation: booking something, apologising, asking for information. No essays. You are marked on covering every point in the prompt, hitting the word count, and using the right register.
A short face-to-face conversation, usually 10 to 15 minutes with one or two examiners. They ask about everyday ground: yourself, your family, your work, your city, your routine. You may be shown an image and asked to describe it. It is the lightest component at 25% of your grade, and usually the most forgiving.
Short recordings in standard European Portuguese: dialogues, announcements and brief monologues, with questions about what you heard. Most items play twice. It runs about 30 minutes and is worth 30% of your grade, which is more than most candidates expect, and the accent is what catches Brazilian-Portuguese learners out.
Short, everyday European-Portuguese texts and questions about them. Nothing is academic. You get text messages, signs and notices, longer personal descriptions and short stories. The paper is built from a few repeating task types, which is what makes reading the fastest part of the exam to improve at.
CIPLE stands for Certificado Inicial de Português Língua Estrangeira. It is the A2-level exam in the system run by CAPLE, the assessment centre at the University of Lisbon. A2 is the level most Portuguese citizenship applications require, which is why CIPLE is by far the most in-demand exam CAPLE offers.
The CIPLE is marked in three components. Reading and writing are combined into one component worth 45% of your grade. Listening is worth 30%. Speaking is worth 25%. You sit reading, writing and listening as timed written papers, and speaking as a short face-to-face conversation with examiners.
Valid photo identification that matches the document you registered with. That is the one item you cannot be admitted without. Bring your registration confirmation and candidate number too, plus pens. Know the address and the travel time in advance, and arrive early, because being rushed wrecks your first paper.
