When should I register for the CIPLE exam relative to my deadline?
Work backwards from your deadline. Budget about three months from exam day to certificate in hand, because results take up to six weeks and issuing takes another 21 working days on top. Then add the time to find a slot at all, which can be the longest stage of the lot.

- Finding and securing a slot. Unbounded. Sessions run a handful of times a year, popular centres fill within hours, and the portal is unreliable.
- Reaching A2 and preparing for the format. Months, depending on where you start.
Stages 2 and 3 alone are about three months. Stage 5 is the one that has no guaranteed duration and the one that most often breaks a plan.
Do not book the first slot you find if you are not ready
The temptation, once you have finally found availability, is to take it regardless of whether your preparation is where it needs to be. That instinct is understandable and usually expensive.
If you fail, you wait for the next session your centre offers, which can be months away, pay the full fee again, and then wait the results period again. The total delay from a premature attempt is far larger than the delay from waiting for the next session with adequate preparation.
The one thing that makes this decision easy
Know your actual readiness rather than your felt readiness. Candidates who have scored themselves repeatedly against the real pass rule under time pressure can answer "am I ready" with evidence instead of a guess.
That is the entire argument for timed practice before booking. It converts an anxious decision into an arithmetic one.
